It did have a water supply from what is called today Mary’s Well, and there is evidence of some limited terraced agriculture, as well as pasture fields. Nazareth was set in a small basin surrounded by hills and wasn’t very accessible. There are geographical, environmental explanations for Nazareth being so small, she said. Salvaging knowledge ahead of developmentĪlexandre has been excavating sites in the Lower Galilee on behalf of the IAA for the past three decades. Among these residents who arrived during the Judeans’ manifest destiny movement were presumably the family of Jesus’s mother Mary. In a Times of Israel Podcast interview this week, Alexandre says that Jewish settlers came to the Galilee during a northward expansion of un-landed Hasmonean soldiers and others from the late Hellenistic to Early Roman periods (late second century BCE to early or mid-second century CE). I enjoy watching it on multiple levels, and I won’t deny that there have been times where I’ve gotten something spiritual out of it. It just has an energy and a continuity that you can’t look away from. I think this is one of the more entertaining and compelling portraits of Jesus‘ story that has ever been attempted in film. The baptism scene with Jesus & John is also a winner. Rod Steiger, Ernest Borgnine, Anne Bancroft, they are stars for sure but it’s the other roles that shine, like Lawrence Olivier (!!), Christopher Plummer, Peter Ustinov, Anthony Quinn (!!!) and the countless smaller roles like James Farentino as Peter (excellent), Stacy Keach (oh the irony!) as Barrabas (phenomenal job), and my personal fave the great Michael York as a positively UNHINGED (as required) John the Baptist. Which is also important - the CAST!! I mean it’s easily one of the greatest assemblages of acting geniuses in that era. Also the scene of Mary Magdalene and the disciples after the resurrection. Also the Roman centurion scene and the entirety of the conversations between Pilate and Jesus. The prodigal son story scene has STELLAR acting by Robert Powell. There are specific scenes that are endlessly replayable.
It turns iconic and important events into art pieces. The scenes with Herod are especially freaky.
